UV Coating is a durable clear coat applied over printed materials to shield against scratches, tears, and fingerprints, while also intensifying the vibrancy of ink colors.
Recommended Uses
UV Coating is ideal for printed items that will undergo frequent handling, like presentation folders, paperback book covers, and select business cards. It’s also great for promotional materials aiming to captivate attention, such as flagship brochures and direct mail postcards.
Why is it called UV Coating?
UV Coating is applied as a liquid and then instantly dried and bonded using Ultra-Violet light, hence the name “UV Coating.” It can cover the entire printed piece (known as Flooding) or highlight specific areas with Spot coating. Additionally, UV Coating comes in various sheen levels, with high gloss being the most common.
Points to Remember
Compared to other coatings, UV Coating is more resilient than Aqueous Coating but not as durable as a plastic laminate. Due to its thickness, UV Coating may require pre-scoring to prevent cracking when folded.
Lastly, the smooth surface of UV Coating makes it challenging to write on, overprint, rubber stamp, glue, or apply certain labels. If you plan to add anything after production, inform your printer in advance to exclude specific areas from UV coverage.
