C1S is an abbreviation used in the printing industry that stands for “coated one side,” while C2S stands for “coated two sides.” These terms describe the coatings applied to paper by the paper manufacturer.
Why is Paper Coated?
Paper is coated to create a smooth surface for printing and to slow the absorption of ink. The coating serves as a barrier, preventing the ink from seeping into the paper fibers. This control helps produce sharper images and finer details.
Different Coatings, Different Results
Coatings can be glossy, matte, or dull, depending on the application and desired effect. Glossy coatings make ink colors appear more vibrant, while dull coatings create a more subdued look.
Don't Mix Up Your Coatings
It’s important to note that C1S and C2S refer to coatings applied before printing. They are different from post-printing coatings like UV or aqueous coatings, varnishes, or laminates.
