Indicia, pronounced as in-DEE-shuh, is a term used in direct mail that refers to an imprint on each mail piece indicating that the postage has been prepaid.
This imprint replaces the need for a stamp or postage meter imprint and is typically printed directly on the mail pieces. This saves time and money by eliminating the need for manual postage application.
To use an indicia, a postal permit is required. If you’re working with a mail house for your direct mail campaign, you can typically use their permit number for your indicia instead of obtaining your own. Your graphic designer may include the indicia in the original artwork file, or your printer may insert it before printing the pieces.
It’s important to note that an indicia is used for bulk mailings, typically in batches of 200 or 500 pieces, rather than for individual mailings. The presence of an indicia on each piece tells the post office that the postage has been paid and a stamp is not required.
Indicias must adhere to specific rules and formatting guidelines set by the postal service. They are typically printed in the upper right corner of the mail piece, where postage is usually placed. Unlike stamps, the post office does not apply a cancel imprint over the indicia.
For more information on the rules and regulations regarding indicia use, you can refer to the postal service’s guidelines.
What is an Indicia
An Indicia is a postal marking or imprint that signifies that the postage for a piece of mail has been prepaid. It takes the place of a stamp or postage meter imprint and is generally printed directly on the mail piece. This saves the time and expense of applying postage manually. The term “Indicia” is often used in the context of direct mail, where it is used to indicate that the postage has been paid for in advance.
Placement and Format of Indicia
The postal service has specific rules regarding the use of an Indicia. An Indicia must contain certain information and be formatted in a certain way. The placement and format of an Indicia are governed by postal regulations, which vary depending on the country and postal service.
Typically, a mail Indicia is printed in the upper right corner of the mail piece, opposite the delivery address. It should be easily visible and legible, and should not be covered by any other markings or information. The format of an Indicia usually includes the following elements:
- The words “U.S. Postage Paid” or “U.S. Postage Permit”
- The city and state where the permit is held
- The permit number
- The postage value, if applicable (e.g. “Presorted First-Class”, “Presorted Standard”, etc.)
The postal service may also require additional information or formatting, depending on the type of mail being sent and the specific permit being used. It is important to consult the postal regulations and guidelines for your specific situation to ensure compliance with all requirements.
