Perfect Binding is a popular method of binding softcover books. In this process, the pages and cover of the book are glued together at the spine using a strong and flexible thermal glue. The other three sides of the book are then trimmed to give them clean and “perfect” edges.
You’ve likely seen many softcover books on bookstore shelves that are perfect bound. They typically have a square spine and the cover is often made from heavier paper or cardstock compared to the interior pages. The cover may also be clear coated for added durability and a polished look.
Businesses, organizations, and authors often choose perfect binding for various printing projects because it offers a professional appearance at a relatively low cost. It’s commonly used for reports, manuals, catalogs, and thicker brochures and magazines.
Benefits of Perfect Binding:
- Professional Appearance: Perfect bound books look polished and professional.
- Cost-Effective: They are less expensive to produce than hardcover books.
- Stackability: They stack neatly, making them easy to store and display.
- Spine Printing: The square spine allows for printing of the book’s title or other information.
The Perfect Binding Process:
- Stack Pages: The pages are stacked to form a block.
- Roughen Spine: The spine edge is roughened to increase the glue bonding area.
- Apply Glue: Hot glue is applied to the roughened spine.
- Attach Cover: The cover is wrapped around the block and adheres to the spine glue.
- Trim Edges: The three open edges of the book are trimmed for a clean finish.
