Printing 101: What is Envelope Converting?

Envelope converting refers to the process of transforming flat sheets of paper into finished envelopes. This process involves several steps, including printing, cutting, folding, gluing, and sometimes die-cutting. It is used to create a wide range of envelope sizes, styles, and designs to meet specific customer needs. Envelope converting is typically done by specialized companies that have the equipment and expertise to handle the complex production process.

Custom-converted envelopes offer a unique opportunity to create a lasting impression and set your business apart from competitors. The initial impression often begins with the envelope carrying your correspondence and marketing materials. Custom conversion allows you to tailor the envelope to your exact needs, ensuring the perfect size and incorporating desired features. Elevate your brand image with uniquely crafted envelopes that reflect the essence of your business.

Stock vs. Custom Converted Envelopes

Business envelopes are produced in various types and sizes to fulfill specific functional and promotional requirements. When it comes to printed envelopes, some projects are well-suited for stock (pre-converted) envelopes, while others necessitate custom-converted envelopes.

Large envelope converters manufacture stock envelopes in large quantities. These are typically packaged and stored until required. Stock envelopes are either sold to end-users as blank envelopes or sold to commercial printers who apply custom printing for specific customer projects. In fact, most custom-printed business envelopes can be created by imprinting on stock (pre-converted) envelopes.

On the other hand, custom envelopes are converted on a project-by-project basis. These are created for customers with unique needs that cannot be met with a stock envelope. Any printing required is typically done before the paper is cut and folded into envelopes. Additionally, depending on the desired style and features of the envelope, custom converting generally requires a minimum order of 5,000 to 10,000 pieces.

Envelope Converting Circumstances

  • Full-Color Envelopes: Many promotional envelopes use full-color images or designs printed on both sides. Pre-converted envelopes can interfere with ink application due to seams. Custom converting allows for multi-sided images to be printed on flat paper before conversion.
  • Unique Size: Some projects require non-standard dimensions. Uncommon sizes can draw attention in direct mail, or an envelope may need special proportions to accommodate unusual contents. Custom converting allows for die-cutting to match specific size requirements before folding and gluing.
  • Non-Standard Window: Envelopes can have die-cut windows to display a delivery address or other information. Custom converting allows for custom window sizes, shapes, and locations to meet specific needs.
  • Special Interior Tint: A security tint on an envelope’s interior can prevent confidential information from being seen through the envelope. Custom converting allows for a custom security tint, such as a repeating design of a company’s name or logo.
  • Embossing: Embossing on a pre-converted envelope can result in a debossed image on the reverse side. Custom converting allows for embossing to be done on flat paper before conversion, eliminating the debossed image on the reverse side.
