Printing 101: What is Comb Binding?

Comb Binding, also known as Cerlox binding or Surelox binding, is a method of binding documents that uses a cylindrical plastic shape. This plastic shape has multiple curved tines along its length. The tines are pre-formed into a closed ring shape, and each ring-shaped tine contains tension. When these tines are spread apart and then released, the tension closes them back into a circular shape.

The rigid plastic shape forms the book’s spine, which would resemble a hair comb if it were not formed into a cylinder, hence the name Comb Binding. This method produces a durable and professional-looking document. To bind a book with this method, the curved tines are spread open and inserted through rectangular slots punched along the spinal edge of the book’s cover and pages. When the tension in the tines is released, the spine closes back into its original shape and secures the covers and pages as a unit yet allows them to turn freely.

Benefits of Using A Booklet

Comb Binding, also known as Cerlox binding or Surelox binding, has several benefits:

  • Versatility: Comb binding is suitable for binding documents of various sizes, from small booklets to larger manuals. The binding element is available in different diameters, allowing you to choose the appropriate size based on the thickness of your document.
  • Ease of Use: The process of comb binding is relatively simple and straightforward. It involves punching rectangular holes along the spinal edge of the document and then inserting the curved tines of the comb binding element through the holes. Once the tines are released, they close back into their original shape, securing the covers and pages.
  • Durability: Comb binding produces a durable and professional-looking document. The plastic comb spine provides sturdy support for the pages and covers, ensuring that the document remains intact even with frequent use.
  • Lay-Flat Capability: Documents bound with comb binding can lay flat when opened, making it easier to read and write on both sides of the pages. This is particularly useful for manuals, workbooks, and other documents that require frequent reference.
  • Affordability: Comb binding is a cost-effective binding method, making it suitable for businesses, schools, and individuals with budget constraints. The binding elements are reusable, allowing you to rebind or update documents as needed without additional cost.
  • Customization: Comb binding offers the flexibility to customize the cover and spine of the document. You can choose from a variety of cover materials, colors, and designs to create a professional and personalized look.
  • Easy Editing: Documents bound with comb binding can be easily edited or updated by removing the comb binding element, making changes to the pages, and then reinserting the tines. This makes comb binding ideal for documents that require frequent updates or revisions.

Overall, comb binding is a versatile, durable, and cost-effective binding method that offers several benefits for a wide range of documents. Whether you need to bind a small booklet, a large manual, or anything in between, comb binding provides a professional and practical solution.
